When I think of famous Norwegian artists... only Edvard
Munch comes to mind. I don't know that many famous Scandinavian artists, it's a
shame. Oh well, Munch was a pretty awesome painter! I didn't know this but apparently
he was a printmaker too. I am really into fine art and graphic design, so I can
appreciate the artwork at a different level because I know what goes into
making it.
The ideas and concepts behind Munch's work were inspired by
expressionism and symbolism. Edvard Munch was born on December 12, 1863 in Ådalsbruk
in Løten,
Norway. Munch had a deeper meaning as to why he created art. He said "in
my art I attempt to explain life and its meaning to myself". Munch
struggled with anxiety and he hallucinated. In 1893 The Scream was created. According to Wikipedia, Edvard Munch wrote
about what inspired him to paint that painting, "I was walking down the
road with two friends when the sun set; suddenly, the sky turned as red as
blood. I stopped and leaned against the fence, feeling unspeakably tired.
Tongues of fire and blood stretched over the bluish black fjord. My friends
went on walking, while I lagged behind, shivering with fear. Then I heard the
enormous, infinite scream of nature". The article then goes on
to say "He later described the personal anguish behind the painting, 'for
several years I was almost mad… You know my picture, 'The Scream?' I was
stretched to the limit—nature was screaming in my blood… After that I gave up
hope ever of being able to love again'". Munch then received therapy and
had a more positive outlook that reflected in his paintings. Munch died January
23, 1944 in Oslo, Norway.
